Making a phone call in South Africa is stupidly expensive. There have been many attempts at talking around this or even denying it's true, but nothing - not even fuel or your morning coffee - drains as quickly as the talk minutes on your phone. At the center of this is the MTN/Vodacom duopoly, which have gone from pioneering mobile telecommunications in the country to strangling it.
